Opposition Leaders Hail Pradhan's Resignation as "Victory for Students," Say Fight Isn't Over

Gen Voice July 26, 2026 — 11:08 AM By MAHAK VERMA 3 min read

Opposition leaders across parties moved quickly to claim Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation as a moment of vindication for the student-led protest movement. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called it a major step toward rebuilding India's education system, congratulating students across the country for standing up for democracy and the Constitution through peaceful means. He added, however, that two demands still needed to be met — a public apology from the Prime Minister over the NEET controversy, and action against those responsible for the alleged violence against students during the protests. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav described the resignation as a major victory for the new generation, saying the government would now have to seriously rethink everything from primary education onward, while separately calling it less a resignation than a revolution in a social media post. AAP's Arvind Kejriwal similarly framed it as a big win for democracy, and senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said the resignation represented the victory of millions of young people who had taken to the streets to demand reform of the education system, adding that it was now the government's turn to apologise and take strict action against those who used force on protesters. RJD's Tejashwi Yadav and NCP's Supriya Sule also welcomed the move, framing it as proof that sustained, peaceful pressure from students had worked. Political commentary since the resignation has noted that the episode marks a rare instance of the government being forced to yield ministerial accountability under public pressure, with analysts suggesting the protests could continue to shape the political narrative around the BJP-led government in the months ahead, depending on how the remaining demands are handled.

Separately, following further talks, the government confirmed it had agreed to CJP's two remaining demands — compensation for the families of students who died by suicide over the exam controversy, and no action against protesters involved in an earlier clash on July 20.
